A Thought Provoking Quote
Why is the evocative so attractive? It is more than a sign of weakness: it is a kind of universal recognition of our loss. Our loss as what? As humans, having come from somewhere else.

evoke: to bring or recall to the conscious mind.
I agree, Charlie, that he is using it in a slightly differrent way than we would casually use the word in Art History. It is rather like the distinction between the truth and The Truth, as we have said so many times. Here, I believe we have the evocative and The Evocative. I don't, however, think this idea is at all alienated from many of the themes we talked about in art history.
I think that if you accept what this quote suggests, then you must inevitably come to the conclusion that most people (at least most that I know) have a fundamental misunderstanding of what spirituality (and being human, for that matter) means.
Sorry that all I've been able to post is this, but with a paper, two problem sets and two midterms this week, and then a final paper and three final exams in the next two weeks, this will have to suffice until the quarter comes to a close.
